Oren Akelund

Oren Akelund Oren Denver Akelund, the eighth child of Harman Lavern Akelund and Dennis Larsen was born in the spring of 1929 on May 13th in Castle Dale, Utah at the start of the Great Depression. He died Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Price, UT. Oren attended elementary school in Castle Dale before moving to Wellington. He left school and started working with the coal mines when he was 13 years of age. As a young man he also worked as a logger, a wrangler for the TY Cattle Company and as a sheepherder with his father. Oren was known as a "man's man" and a "good hand" because of his hard work ethic, dependability and integrity. When others found themselves without work at the end of a construction job, a position was often found for Oren to tie him over so that he would be available for the next project. He worked for Strong, Clyde, Lowdermilk and other construction companies as they built roads and highways throughout the state of Utah. He finished his career by working for Plateau Mining Corporation for 18 years. He married Lola H. Sherman in 1975; after her death he later married Joan B. Sellers. Oren became active in the LDS church in his retirement years where he loved working in the high priests quorum presidency for over 11 years. He enjoyed traveling, family history work, family reunions and attending the temple. He also enjoyed attending Pow Wows, Rendezvous, horse races and musical events. Survived by his wife Joan; her daughters Michelle Sellers, SLC and Nicole Sellers (Ron) Fuller, Redmond, Washington; and Lola's daughters Ilene Sherman Melo, California; Janis Sherman Marchello, Carbonville; Patty Sherman Lemon, Price; and their children, also many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by parents and 9 siblings. Special thanks to the staff at Parkdale Care Center where they have blessed his life for the past 5 years with their care. Funeral services will be Monday, January 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Spring Glen LDS Church. A viewing will be held Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral service from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Interment will be at Manti City Cemetery.
