PRICE- Grandpa, John Russell Echer, age 86, got the chance to be with Grandma again on May 19, 2015, and took it.
He was born on April 2, 1929 in Dix, Colorado to Frank Charles Echer and Agnes Hunter Mcintosh. He married Lenna Beth Rich in Price on Dec. 22, 1949 and was sealed to her on Aug. 4, 2007 in the Manti Temple.
John grew up in Colorado and Wyoming where he worked in a grocery store and on a ranch. He moved with his family to Carbon County when his father transferred to the Wattis Coal Mine. He met his sweetheart, Lenna Beth, at a dance in Price. John, too, worked in the coal mine and at the same time, learned the trade of a contractor. He enjoyed building and working with wood, so he decided to start his own business building homes. He built homes in Price and Helper for 18 years and retired in 1988.
John and Lenna Beth raised two daughters. He often took his girls and their friends on boating trips and would even water ski in his Levis. He enjoyed annual hunting trips with his brothers. He enjoyed fishing with family. He continued these activities with his grandchildren. He enjoyed jamming to eight-track tapes with his grandkids in the motorhome on the way to Huntington Lake, Scofield, Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge.
After retiring, John became an avid golfer. He and Lenna Beth golfed together multiple times a week and enjoyed visiting many courses. They were true orange and blue Bronco fans. He also enjoyed golfing regularly with his friends.
John was a hard worker. He provided for and supported his family. He watched over and strengthened his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He willingly taught and shared his carpentry skills. He was a tease.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, his two sisters and two brothers, and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Sue (Alden) Whitehead of Price, and Marilyn Kay (Jim) Robinson of Lehi; seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and his brother Duncan (Shirley) Echer of Grand Junction, CO.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 22, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the Price City Cemetery.
