Wellington, UT: Edward Joshua "Ned" McCourt departed this life to join his Heavenly Father and departed loved ones on Feb 10, 2015 in Price, UT. He was 94 years old. Born to Thomas Henry McCourt and Goldia Celestia Bromley McCourt, in a log house in Antelope, Duchesne County, UT on Dec. 7, 1920.
Ned grew up in Columbia and Sunnyside, graduating from Carbon High School in 1939, the first member of his extended family to complete high school. He proudly served as a gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1944 he fought in the largest naval battle in history at Leyte Gulf in the Philippine Islands. There he received a navy commendation for swimming through shark-infested waters to rescue wounded survivors of the sunken U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts after the decisive naval engagement off Samar Island. He was also at the battle of Pelilu.
On Jan. 20, 1945, Ned married Bertha Reon Winn. They made their home in Wellington and raised five sons. Ned worked as a Carbon County Deputy Sheriff for 22 years. He was an exemplary police officer and was elected president of the Utah Peace Officers Association in 1965. After retiring from the Sheriff's office in the 1970s, he worked in UMWA coalmines, retiring after 21 years underground.
Ned drove school bus for 43 years and was honored as Utah's school bus driver of the year in 1990. In the early 1950s he was a founding member of the Wellington Mountaineers Riding Club and was the last surviving charter member. He competed in and judged many equestrian events throughout the state. He loved his horses and his farm.
Ned was a High Priest in the L.D.S. Church, serving as Bishop's counselor and longtime member of the Wellington Stake High Council. For the past ten years he spent a good deal of his time doing ordinance work in the Manti Temple. He was a good husband, father and friend.
Ned is survived by his brother Pat (Charlotte) of Parrump, NV. Sons: Tom (Jeannie), Price; Reed, Carbonville; Clyde (Doreen), Wellington; Brad (Lee), Wellington; Jack (Shauna), Spanish Fork; 17 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
Preceded in death by his parents and wife, sisters Mable (Mike) Peterson, Nora (Louis) Bunch, brothers Tom (Gertrude) and Ivan (Lois), and great-grandson Brendon Clyde Young.
Friends may call for a visitation at Fausett Mortuary in Price on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Wellington Stake Center on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015 at 11:00 am with a visitation at the church an hour prior to services. Interment will follow in the Wellington City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Fausett Mortuary in Price, UT.
