Our beloved father has gone home to be with our mother where he always wanted to be. Jay Oviatt passed away on February 6, 2025, at home in his sleep. We will miss his sharp wit and humor, teasing nature, his infectious laughter, his ability to tell a story and make anyone feel welcome. He had a gentle easy-going manner that was hard not to love.
Jay was second born of 4 children to Clinton Oviatt and Dawna Thayne. He loved motorcycles, music, target shooting, westerns and taking vacations with his family. He loved gadgets and remote-controlled toys. He always said he didn’t like animals but was caught often feeding or petting them when he thought no one was looking. He was friendly and caring but due to his intimidating appearance people often would avoid him on the street.
He married the love of his life Wendy Thompson in 1975 and went on to have 2 children Patrick and Misty; 3 grandchildren, Dasia Lewis (Gentry), Jamison Oviatt ( Kelsee)and Ellie Valentin; 3 great grandchildren, Brooks Oviatt, Tuff Oviatt, and unknown.
He was a coal miner for 40 years and retired from Deer Creek mine in 2013. Near the end he enjoyed his daily visits with his sister Ruth and phone calls with his brother Thayne.
He is preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Wendy.
